In July of 2006, this foursome decided to enter the Novice
Quartet Competition in Bakersfield in August as "Happenstance"
and placed a very respectable 3rd place. After much discussion,
they decided to register as an official quartet and changed
their name to "Curtain Call." In December they performed
on the Verdugo Hills Holiday Show. They are all proud members
of the Verdugo Hills Showtime Chorus.

Laura
Smith, lead, is new to Verdugo Hills Showtime Chorus
but not to Sweet Adelines. She grew up attending rehearsals
with her mom and joined a chorus at age 12-14. Now 20 years
later she's found her way back, jumping right into chorus, joining
the front row, and Curtain Call!
Laura was voted Most Promising Lead in her 1st regional competition
with Curtain Call in the spring of 2007.
Laura
is a Marriage and Family Therapist in Pasadena, CA and is
married to David. They are the proud parents of twins, Graham
and Kaley, born on June 1, 2007. (At least there's one future
Sweet Adeline.)"

Jackie
Wheatley, bass, has been a member of Verdugo Hills
Showtime Chorus since 1969. She serves as assistant director,
bass section leader and front row performer. Jackie has been
in 10 quartets over the years and has competed on the international
level twice with Proposition 4 Quartet.
Jackie's new passion is teaching low impact Cardioke (a new
fitness craze developed by Billy Blanks, Jr. which combines
Karaoke and Cardio) in Hollywood. Look for DVD's in late 2007.
She has a son, stepdaughter and four incredible grandchildren.

Singing
baritone is Jan Steese, a member of Verdugo
Hills Showtime Chorus since 1993. She currently serves as baritone
section leader. On her first time out in a competing quartet
at the 2003 Region 11 Quartet Contest, she garnered the Sharon
Berry Award for Most Promising Novice Baritone as a member of
Aftershock Quartet.
Jan and her husband, Clyde, have 2 sons and 2 grandsons, a Corgi
named "Just Jack", a cat "Kenny" and about
one million honeybees not yet named (husband Clyde is a hobbyist
beekeeper). |

Penny
Parisi, tenor, is a relative newcomer to barbershop
singing, but not to music. Receiving a bachelors degree and
credential in music education, Penny has taught music in the
Los Angeles Unified School District and currently teaches in
the El Monte Unified School District.
She has sung with various choirs, including the Festive Touch
Caroling Company. However, right now, she's thoroughly enjoying
being a member of Curtain Call, and singing and dancing in the
front row of Verdugo Hills Showtime Chorus. In
the spring of 2007 at Curtain Call's 1st regional competition,
Penny was presented with the Most Promising Tenor award.
Penny
and husband, Nick, have two adult children who seem to understand
Mom's hobby. "Hobby?" Penny quips. "Barbershop
is my therapy!" |
